What role should ICT play in compulsory education in the 21st century?
Over the last 20+ years there has been a great deal of hype about the potential of ICT to transform schooling and substantial investment in 'educational' ICT. Whilst there is evidence that ICT can have a positive impact on learning it is also widely acknowledged that the scale of impact does not correspond with the rhetoric or level of financial investment.
In the current financial climate and a context in which head teachers have greater responsibility for spending decisions, future investments in ICT will have to justify themselves in terms of cost effectiveness. The challenge is how to weigh up the relative benefits of different 'educational' investments.
This session explores these issues, and provides a framework for thinking about the impact of educational innovations, with a particular focus on ICT.
The intention is to help head teachers (and others) to make informed decisions about further investments in 'educational' ICT.

ICT and learning impact - feedback on the use of the Kindle, Kinect and iPod Touch in schools
Central to Vital’s ethos is the belief that teachers should re-take ownership of their professional development.
To support teachers' development, Vital introduced a small scale loan service in three regions. Limited numbers of ICT kit, including Kindles, Kinects and iPod touches, are being loaned to schools on a short term basis. Schools have been asked to feedback the impact these items have had upon both learning and, where applicable, administrative or assessment tasks.
Teachers are encouraged to feedback, in the widest terms, the impact the equipment has. They are asked to make their own judgments concerning benefit and impact upon; student motivation, engagement, attendance, enjoyment and learning.
The seminar will report schools' findings and the how the loan programme has supported teachers' professional development needs.

Enquiry in the classroom using 'Challenge-based learning' and Sugata Mitra's 'Self-organising learning environments'
Workshop format
Enquiry-based learning inspires the students to learn for themselves and develops independence and creativity. You may have heard the terms 'Project-based learning' or 'Challenge-based learning' or even heard Sugata Mitra describe students in 'Self organised learning environments'. So what are these different approaches and how do we use them in the classroom? In this workshop, we will look at the different approaches to enquiry in the classroom. We will model enquiry questions and work in groups to collaboratively to present solutions. We will see how ICT in the classroom can be used to guide and support the students' research and conclusions.
